Executive and legislative branch leaders are convening an unusual midyear economic roundtable next week to discuss federal policy changes and the state of the economy.

The open meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 30 was announced Wednesday (September 24) by Administration and Finance Secretary Matthew Gorzkowicz and Senate and House Ways and Means Chairs Michael Rodrigues and Aaron Michlewitz.

They plan to gather unnamed “experts” as state government heads into the second quarter of fiscal year 2026 and Gov. Maura Healey’s team begins laying out plans for a fiscal 2027 state budget proposal that will be the first spending plan to take into account impacts from the federal One Big Beautiful Bill that was signed in July.

“It is as important as ever that we continue to assess and seek to understand what is happening in our economy and the impacts we might experience from federal budget and policy changes coming out of Washington,” Gorzkowicz said in a statement. Unemployment has been on the rise in Massachusetts, holding in August at 4.8% compared to 3.5% in August 2023, and key sectors here like life sciences, higher education, health care and state government itself are feeling a pinch from policies enacted by the Trump administration and the Republican-controlled Congress.

The roundtable is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Tuesday in Room 428 of the State House.

Executive and legislative branch leaders will also convene in December to discuss the state of play midway through fiscal 2026 and to explore the potential fiscal 2027 revenue outlook.
