October 23, 2025, Boston, MA — The Engineering and Public Works Roadshow, a national initiative to elevate the role of infrastructure in everyday life, made its latest stop in Boston, MA to celebrate the William Felton “Bill” Russell Bridge, a project that exemplifies the power of engineering and public works to improve lives, strengthen communities, and drive local resilience. The event was hosted by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC/MA) and held at RSM in Boston

Over 75 attendees heard from the following speakers:

  • Gerry Preble, ACEC/MA President
  • Jonathan Gulliver, Undersecretary and Highway Administrator, MassDOT
  • Julia Campbell, PE, Deputy Chief of Streets/City Engineer, City of Boston
  • State Senator Lydia Edwards – 3rd Suffolk District
  • State Representative Daniel Ryan – 2nd Suffolk District
  • Boston City Councilor Sharon Durkin – District 8
  • Ed Baumann, PE, Benesch

The event highlighted the completion of the new William Felton “Bill” Russell Bridge, which replaces the original North Washington Street Bridge that opened in 1900 and connected Boston’s North End and Charlestown neighborhoods across the Charles River. Construction began in 2018 and concluded in 2025, delivering a modern, multi-modal crossing designed for the next century of use. The new bridge features wider sidewalks, protected bike lanes, and a dedicated bus lane to improve safety and mobility for thousands of daily travelers.

“The William Felton ‘Bill’ Russell Bridge shows what can be achieved when engineers and public agencies work together toward a shared goal,” said Gerry Preble, President of the ACEC/MA Board of Directors. “As part of ACEC’s Engineering and Public Works Roadshow, this event highlights the essential role that engineers play in delivering infrastructure that connects people, drives economic growth, and improves quality of life across Massachusetts.”

Developed by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) in partnership with the City of Boston and other regional stakeholders, the project demonstrates how collaboration among engineers, public agencies, and contractors delivers safe, sustainable public works that strengthen communities across Massachusetts.

“The Bill Russell Bridge is a milestone for the Commonwealth and City of Boston, embodying a clear example of what can be achieved when public agencies and engineers work hand in hand,” said Jonathan Gulliver, MassDOT Undersecretary and MassDOT Highway Administrator. “This project delivers safer, more efficient travel for thousands of people each day and represents our shared commitment to building infrastructure that meets the needs of future generations.”

As part of the event, attendees took part in a guided technical walking tour led by project experts, offering an inside look at the bridge’s design, construction, and engineering innovations. These technical tour guides included: Ed Baumann, Benesch, Ashley Bomely, Benesch, Cheryl Coviello, GZA GeoEnvironmental, Miguel Rosales, Rosales+, and Michael Smith, GZA GeoEnvironmental.  Walking tour guides who brought participants to each stop on the tour included: Oluchi Anyachukwu, STV, John Doherty, CDM Smith, Jonathan Kunay, CDM Smith, Kevin O’Shea, ACEC/MA, and Alexis Sparrow, TECET.  Rebecca Kennedy, TECET and Abbie Goodman, ACEC/MA, provided additional event management.

Special thanks to RSM in Boston for hosting this event.  Greg Natalucci, a partner with RSM, along with Heather Harrington, and Lucas Herter, also of RSM, were key to the success of this event.

Launched in 2022, the Engineering and Public Works Roadshow is a collaboration between the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), the American Public Works Association (APWA), and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
