Update on I-93 Fast14 Rapid Bridge Replacements Successfully Completed

Here's the schedule of I-93 construction activities to replace fourteen deteriorated bridge superstructures in Medford this summer, with what has already been completed and more about the project below: 

August 12 – August 15, 2011:  As expected, crews completed the 14th and final bridge replacement by the morning of August 15: Route 16 (south).  This is the fourteenth and last bridge for this project.   Congratulations to MassDOT and the team of engineers and contractors!

August 5 – August 8, 2011:  The ninth weekend of bridge replacements focused on the Route I-93 South bridge over Riverside Avenue.  That work took place between 8:00 PM, Friday, August 5 and 5:00 AM, Monday, August 8.  All work was completed ahead of schedule; all lane restrictions were removed as of 3:51 AM Monday morning.
 

July 29 – August 1, 2011:  The eighth weekend of bridge replacements focused on the Route I-93 South bridge over Webster Street and the back spans on the Route I-93 South bridge over the Mystic River.  Work took place between 8:00 PM Friday, July 29 and 5:00 AM Monday, August 1.  All work was completed ahead of schedule; all lane restrictions were removed as of 10:09 pm Sunday evening.
 

July 22 – July 25, 2011:  The seventh weekend of bridge replacements focused on the Route I-93 South bridge over Route 28 South (Fellsway)/Valley Street and the center span on the Route I-93 South bridge over the Mystic River.  I-93 lane restrictions were lifted early, at 1:10 AM. 

July 15 – July 18, 2011:  Two bridges:  Salem Street westbound (south) and Salem Street eastbound (south) were  completed this weekend, ahead of schedule.  Federal Highway (FHWA) Administrator Victor Mendez visited Medford during a FHWA - MassDOT I-93Fast14 Project Showcase over the weekend to view the project to replace crumbling bridge decks while trying to minimize impacts on traffic flows.  The 93Fast14 Project is midway through its summer schedule.  Under the construction schedule, bridge superstructures are removed and replaced on weekends only, with two lanes open in each direction on I-93 in Medford from 8 PM on Friday through 5 AM on Monday. The bridge sections are built off-site and arrive ready to install during the 55-hour weekend windows.
 

July 8 - July 11, 2011:  The fifth weekend of bridge replacements focused on the Route I-93 north bridge over Webster Street and the two approach spans of the Route I-93 north bridge over the Mystic River.  The work was completed by  4:25 AM Monday, July 11.  

June 24 – June 27, 2011  Two bridges:  Valley Street/Fellsway (north) and Mystic River Center Span (north) were replaced this weekend.

June 17-June 20, 2011:  The fourth bridge on Route I-93 north over Route 16 (Mystic Valley Parkway) was successfully replaced this weekend.

June 13, 2011:  The second and third I-93 rapid bridge superstructure replacements in Medford as part of the I-93 Fast14 Project were completed successfully and ahead of schedule late Sunday, June 13, 2011, 5.5 hours ahead of schedule. These were:  Salem Street eastbound (north) and Salem Street westbound (north)

June 5, 2011:  The first I-93 rapid bridge superstructure replacement in Medford as part of the I-93 Fast14 Project was completed successfully and ahead of schedule late Sunday, June 5, 2011. I-93 was completely reopened to traffic just before 10:00 PM on June 5, seven hours ahead of schedule.

As the 93Fast14 project continues on weekends in June, July and August except for the July 4th weekend, MassDOT strongly advises drivers to plan their travel routes and times carefully and to use alternate routes or public transportation to avoid this area if possible.  MassDOT recommends drivers that do not have a destination in the Medford/Downtown Boston area use alternate routes [I-495, I-95 (Route 128), Route 1 and I-90] to avoid the construction area.

The $91.8 million project to replace the fourteen bridge superstructures in Medford is funded through the Patrick-Murray Administration’s historic Accelerated Bridge Program to reduce the Commonwealth’s backlog of structurally-deficient bridges.
